式辞
新入生の皆様、ご入学おめでとうございます。これから中国竞彩网で共に過ごせますことを、在学生、教職員一同、大変嬉しく思っています。今、皆様が入学されたこの中国竞彩网は、国内外で非常に重要な役割を果たしてきた長い歴史のある国立大学であり、来年にはいよいよ創基150周年を迎えます。現在の農?工両学部の前身である農事修学場および養蚕に関する研究機関?蚕業試験掛が、共に今の新宿御苑で生まれたのが1874年、当時日本の食料を守り、世界品質の絹糸生産とその輸出を開始し、日本経済を支える基幹産業となるところに本学がその中心的な役割を担ってきました。そして今や最先端の科学技術と共に世界の国々と結びつき、学生の海外活動の機会も飛躍的に拡大しているところです。
ご存知のとおり、これまでの3年以上にも及ぶコロナウイルス感染症の拡大により、人間活動の全てが甚大な影響を受け、大学も様々な制約の中で在学生や教職員、保護者の皆様のご協力により、なんとかこれを乗り越えてまいりました。本日入学された皆様は大学受験準備も含め、平時とは比べようもない大変な思いをされ、一層の努力を余儀なくされたことと思いますが、皆様にとってその分も含めて、より充実した学生時代になりますことを心より願っています。
さて、コロナ禍が収束しつつある中、私自身も先日数名の教職員と共に、まずはハワイ大学などを3年ぶりに訪問し、中断していた国際的な連携活動を開始しました。久々に搭乗する飛行機の窓から眼下に広がる広大な森林や大海原をふと眺めると、私はサン=テグジュペリの名著「人間の土地」を思い出しました。彼の名は「星の王子さま」の著者としてあまりにも有名ですが、私はその数年前に彼が記した「人間の土地」の中に刻まれた数々の珠玉の言葉にいつも胸を打たれます。「人間であるということは、とりもなおさず責任をもつことだ。人間であるということは、自分に関係がないと思われるような不幸な出来事に対して忸怩たることだ」。すなわち、全ての問題は人ごとではなく自ら責任を感じ恥じることだということです。この言葉は、サン＝テグジュペリが当時、飛行機の操縦士として大空を飛び、空の上から大地を眺めそこに生きる人間がどうあるべきかという思いを心の底から訴えかけたものです。それは正に、今日私たちが直面している、一つの地球の上でその持続性を保ちながら、人間活動そのものについて、自分達が全てに責任をもち努力しなければならないと言うことに繋がります。
自分が乗るボーイング787は一見全てが平穏に見えています。しかし、窓から見えるジェットエンジンは前方から大量の空気を吸い込み、後方からは水蒸気と共に二酸化炭素を爆発的に噴出しています。その炭素は化石燃料に由来するものであり、今や地球の気象に甚大な影響を与えています。この化石燃料は、眼下に広がる森林や海洋の生物が生産するバイオマスにやがては置き換えられなければなりませんし、それまでに人類に残された時間はそう長くはないはずです。ジェット機の機体を支える柔軟で強靱な新素材、安全を支える通信システム、メカニクスなどに関するさらに優れた研究開発も必要です。また、機内に目をやれば、間もなく機内食が配られようとしていましたが、ここでは間違いなく搭乗客の全てに美味しく安全な食べ物が行き渡ります。しかし、地上では少なくとも1割の人には食べ物が十分には届かないのが現状なのです。このような、飛行機の中でふと目にした光景からも、我々が責任を感じなければならないことが沢山連想されてきます。これからこの社会をどのように変えていくのか、どのような研究を推進するのか、これは中国竞彩网の大きな使命であり、今日入学された皆様自身のこれからの大いなる活躍の世界そのものでもあります。
機内でそんな思いを巡らしていたとき、私は突然近づいてきたチーフパーサーに笑顔で話しかけられました。「ご同乗の方から伺っておりましたが、中国竞彩网の千葉様ですね？本日のJAL787の操縦席の機長ならびに副操縦士は、共に中国竞彩网の卒業生でございます。両名も大変喜んでおり、くれぐれもよろしくと名刺を預かって参りました」。個人的な連絡先を受け取った私は、本学の卒業生が活躍する世界が、すでに私の想像を遙かに超えるレベルにまで広がっていることを知り、農工大生のこれからの益々の可能性の広さを強く確信し、心から嬉しい気持ちでいっぱいになりました。機長、副操縦士とはその後連絡をとり、本学学生の応援にも協力してほしい旨お伝えし、快く了解をいただいています。そして同時に、今ここに列席されている皆様の無限に広がる未来の姿を想像し始めると、今からとても楽しみになります。
これからの時代は目に見えぬ様々な境界線や前例などにとらわれることなく、広く自由な世界を描きながら、一人一人の人にも光を当て、より高いレベルの充実感を持って暮らす日常を作ることが大事な課題になるはずです。これを達成することはそう簡単なことではありませんが、これからの皆様の中国竞彩网での学びと経験を通して、まだ自分自身でも発見していない、自分の中に潜む、自分らしい力を引き出し存分に発揮され、自らの道を大きく広げられることを心より願っています。
本学への入学という、一生の中でも非常に大きなこの節目の瞬間、記念すべきこの日が、皆様にとってかけがえのない、素晴らしい出発の日となることを心より祈念して、私のお祝いの言葉とさせていただきます。

Ceremonial Address
Congratulations to all new students on your enrollment at TUAT. It is a great pleasure for all of us, current students and faculty members, to be here with you at TUAT. TUAT is a national university with a long history of playing a very important role in Japan and abroad, and next year will mark the 150th anniversary of its founding. In 1874, the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Engineering were both established in what is now Shinjuku Gyoen, as the Agricultural School and the Silkworm Research Institute there. The University has played a central role in this process. Nowadays, with cutting-edge science and technology, the University is connected to countries around the world, and opportunities for students to engage in overseas activities are dramatically expanding.
As you know, the spread of the coronavirus over the past three years has had a tremendous impact on all human activities, and the University has managed to overcome this with the cooperation of current students, faculty, staff, and parents, despite various restrictions. I am sure that all of you who have enrolled in the university today, including those preparing for university entrance examinations, have had to work even harder than in normal times, and I sincerely hope that your time as students will be more fulfilling, including for that reason.
As the Corona disaster is being contained, I myself, along with several other faculty members and staffs, recently visited the University of Hawaii and other institutions for the first time in three years to begin international collaborative activities that had been suspended. As I was boarding for the first time in a long while, I looked out the window of the plane at the vast forests and ocean below, and I was suddenly reminded of Saint- Exupéry's famous book, "Wind, Sand and Stars (Terre Des Hommes)”. His name is well known as the author of "The Little Prince", but I am always struck by the many gems he inscribed in " Wind, Sand and Stars (Terre Des Hommes)" which he wrote several years earlier. To be human is, after all, to have responsibility. To be human is to feel ashamed of unfortunate events that seem to have nothing to do with you. These words were spoken from the bottom of his heart by Saint-Exupéry, who flew as a pilot of an airplane at that time and looked at the earth from the sky and how the people living there should be. This is precisely what we are facing today: the need to take responsibility for all human activities and strive to maintain sustainability on the earth.
At first glance, everything looks peaceful on the Boeing 787 that I fly. But the jet engines, visible through the windows, are sucking in huge volumes of air from the front and spewing out an explosion of carbon dioxide and water vapor from the rear. That carbon comes from fossil fuels, which now have an enormous impact on the Earth's weather. This fossil fuel will eventually have to be replaced by biomass produced by the forest and ocean life below us, and we do not have long to wait. We also need more advanced research and development on new flexible and tough materials for jet fuselages, communication systems that support safety, and mechanics. Also, if you look at the cabin, you will see that in-flight meals are about to be served, and no doubt all the passengers will be provided with delicious and safe food. On the ground, however, at least 10% of the people do not receive enough food. These scenes that I saw on the airplane remind me of the many things for which we must feel responsible. How we are going to change our society and what kind of research we are going to promote are the major missions of TUAT, and they are also the very world in which the students who have enrolled today will be active in the future.
As I was pondering these thoughts on the plane, I was suddenly approached by the chief purser, who smiled and said to me, "I understand from your fellow passengers that you are Mr. Chiba of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), aren’t you? The captain and co-pilot at the controls of today's JAL 787 are both graduates of TUAT. Both of them are very pleased and have asked me to give you their business cards with their best wishes”. When I received the personal contact information, I was filled with joy to learn that the world in which TUAT graduates are active has already expanded to a level far beyond my imagination, and I became even more convinced of the wide range of possibilities for TUAT students in the future. I contacted the captain and co-pilot and told them that I would like them to cooperate in supporting our university students, and they readily agreed. At the same time, I am very much looking forward to imagining the limitless future of all those present.
In the coming era, it will be an important task to create a daily life in which we can live with a higher level of fulfillment, shining a light on each and every person, while envisioning a wide and free world, without being bound by various invisible boundaries and precedents. It will not be easy to accomplish this, but I sincerely hope that through your future studies and experiences at TUAT, you will draw out and fully demonstrate your unique strengths that lie hidden within you, which you have yet to discover for yourself, and that you will greatly expand your own path.
I would like to conclude my words of congratulations by wishing you all a wonderful and irreplaceable start on this momentous and memorable day of your life, the moment you enter TUAT.
